Pain is a defensive system of the body telling us something is wrong, like putting your hand on a hot stove. You wouldn't live for long feeling no pain unless you live your life, even then diseases will take more to be aware of.

Did you think about the other side. Brittle bones WILL break they are brittle for heavens sake.

I can see the down side to no pain but that has some positives too. if you can find a positive to Extremely brittle bones be sure to let me know.

Like Dan Za Man(lin) said the lack of pain could lead to serious diseases going unnoticed and smaller injuries being ignored. You could break a bone in your hand and not notice it until it is to late to be set.

There was a woman who felt no pain she didn't have any teeth because she kept biting herself she walked on a broken knee for 2 years when she didn't know it was broken. She sat in a rolling chair and couldn't do shit.

I would rather have fully strenthened bones that, if they do break, i wont feel anything than me breaking bones every minute and being in a lot of pain. And besides, even if you do die from some horrible disease because you cant feel it, at least you die without suffering

Daniel, have you not heard of a doctor's office? You will still know when you've hurt yourself and just get shots more often better than brittle bones

There's still no argument in support of brittle bones, only attacking the "feel no pain" side. What are you lot, politicians?

People with CIPA (the illness where you can't feel pain) can often do the following: - bite their tongues off - get bruises and cuts and do nothing about it (think little children and how often they fall), leading to infections - they don't know when they're hungry.. they don't get the hunger pain (this is pain too FYI) - can scratch their eyes out if it's itchy (or any other body part) - overheat (they can't sweat to regulate body temp) - when sleeping or sitting can cause serious injuries to their bones (we adjust our sitting/sleeping when we feel uncomfortable.. if without pain, we wouldn't KNOW what discomfort is) so their joints often deteriorate WHICH IS BASICALLY BRITTLE BONES cept you dont have all the other stuff - can continuously bash their heads against something thinking it's fun, not knowing it's seriously damaging and many others. HOW is having brittle bones better than dying before you're 5?

With no pain, you wouldn't know when you've been hurt. You'd have to check yourself for injuries every day or risk dying from an infection.

Daniel yes pain is a important defence mechanic but its biggest importance is when you grow up. Odds are we now know whats dangerous and whats not.

    • 5

      Sean Maher

Mr. Zamalin is actually wrong. Even if you did not feel pain your brain would still react to a hot stove. This is because reflexes like pulling one's hand back are caused by instinctual reflexes, not voluntary behaviors. In fact, even quadriplegics have been known to still be capable of performing such reflexes, despite the lack of sensation in their bodies.

Daniel if you had very brittle bones they would be even more brittle because it would also have to support the weight of the tissue fat muscle ligaments etc. Loyfullreaper you are forgetting about common sense and if you had broken a bone in your hand you would notice that your arm/wrist/hand is broken because of obvious general appearance and movement of the limb. If you have ever seen someone with a broken arm without a cast you will see that his arm looks like a staircase and cannot be unnoticed unless you are a complete and absolute idiot just like if you placed your hand on a hot stove you would feel the heat just not burning sensation that you would get if you could feel pain and with brittle bones if someone hurt you there would be even more pain then if you had normal bones because they probably damaged your bones and the me-roe inside would have leaked. Sorry if there are any spelling errors but for some reason I couldn't use commas apostrophes etc. Sorry if you are offended this was meant to be a legitimate criticism on your point of view in this "debate" if you could call it that. Good day -Peter P.S. When I said absolute idiot in my argument I was referring to you so do not be mad ;).

'Tis not, although yes, it is far more dangerous to not feel pain. If one is logical, and does not intentionally do overly harmful things, and is cautious enough, they'd be fine. Evidently, having a medical disorder, condition or disease would effect you harshly, but keep in mind if you happened to perish, it would be painless.

Not feeling pain would be extremely dangerous. It's a real medical condition (CIPA) and is one of the worst conditions one can have. After running you would have to check your feet for blister and check your temperature. What if you sat on a stove or accidentally cut yourself without realizing it? Finally, when you break bones, they grow back stronger, so..

I get the people saying that pain can save your life, but how often are you really in a situation where if you didn't feel pain, you'd literally die? There's people living on this planet who don't feel pain. And I'm sure if you felt no pain there would be some kind of supervision or some way to make sure nothing happens. Having extremely brittle bones on the other hand is a lot more risky.

EXACTLY. Finally a smart comment. Do people not realize that you wouldn't be able to even PEE like a normal person without pain? I saw a documentary on it. This girl basically bashed her head in everyday because well... no pain, no control.

Not feeling pain has some advantages and numerous disadvantages. Brittle bones has no advantage at all. Also, it never says we were born like that. A person who has felt pain for 19 years and then stopped will survive longer than a person who was healthy for 19 years and now constantly breaks bones.

People don't consider that there are other feelings besides pain, for example notice when you touch something, you feel it, it isn't painful but you feel it. If someone for example, hits you with a baseball bat you'd still feel the force of it. As long as you aren't really stupid and do stuff like letting people punch you because you're unable to feel it wouldn't be too bad. Oh and for people who say but when you're a baby you wouldn't know that, ummm how many babies are gonna be on here? It doesn't say you'd be born with it, yes life will be hard but you'll still be able to feel that something is warm or there's a lot of pressure in an area. Not that I'm saying you'd be just as safe, but as long as your careful you'd have a much better chance. Also consider this, in a situation where you're in a fight or have to protect your family from being killed. You're more likely to win because you won't react to pain while they continue punching you and you don't react, you can hit them and they'll have much more of a reaction. Yeah I know your body still takes damage, but you can kill or knock them out before they do too much. You'd have to be more careful with brittle bones than not being able to feel pain. Really the biggest problem with not feeling pain is your ego may get too high. You might start fighting people just for fun because you'd have the advantage of no pain. You'd do things that are much more dangerous, even if not selfishly you're more likely to punch that kid bothering your friend and then have all his friends jump you. And yes there's also the issue of diseases, that's true. But I think people with that condition are constantly checked, but I could be wrong. Either way there are a lot more advantages to no pain than brittle bones. Brittle bones you'd have to be way too careful, that's not something I want. I don't need to mention most reasons since they've already been mentioned a lot. Anyway I think this question should just be "no pain or live normally" the results would be much more interesting.

Yes dude, i love this comment as i dont feel pain anymore and havent for the past 2 and a half years. I still feel pressure and how hard something touches me, and how hot or cold an object is, but just not pain. im also not stupid and just let myself not get hurt cause of what i have but i only use it when i feel like its necessary. and if i feel like i might have been badly injured by something i would go and see my doctor to checkout for any serious injuries.

@Jacob, where in there does it say you are going to be reborn? No where. So I'm sure we would know when to go to the hospital (getting burned, hit, etc). People with that condition also go to the doctor very frequently for check-ups. Having very brittle bones, you are very likely to fall and possibly break your neck or a certain part of your spine, resulting in death. With that said, you sir, are retarded.

    • 0

      Jacob

I guess you're rich enough to go to the hospital all the time. Getting burned and hit aren't the only ways to die. You will constantly be having to check yourself, and there's plenty of things that you still won't see. I can be careful and not fall. There are certain things that all the care in the world won't prevent, and you won't be able to feel them. So if you have thousands of dollars to spend every month, go for it. You still will not be able to live a full life with all the time you have to spend with checking yourself.

Feeling pain would only be a burden otherwise as I would have broken bones almost constantly and wouldn't have much survival chances either way. I'd rather take a health check now and then and avoid things I know are dangerous. Also if you get in a car collision, or someone attacks you, I think I'd actually have bigger survival chances than you (according to our choices)

I love how all the people that chose red keep comment "God you people are stupid" Get this, breaking bones everytime your jackass "friend" at school (By friend I mean asshole bully) trips you up would be a bit more of an inconvenience than being able to shove him through a wall in retaliation and not feel anything. I get it, pain helps us survive, it makes it so we know we're in danger, yeah, but either die early because you DIDN'T feel pain, or die because your FUCKING RIBCAGE SHATTERED when someone bumped into you while they were carrying something like... books, maybe? A TV, boxes, something big and a bit hard? Anything could just break you, and living in California or anywhere with earthquakes would kill you (All your bones would be pulverized from shockwaves), and you get into a car wreck, you're screwed, and no roller coasters, no airplanes (bumpy landing, turbulance, tight areas to easily be bumped), you'd pretty much be stuck driving like an 80-year-old forever in the city you were born in. Still want (Extremely) brittle bones over lack of pain?

If I had extremely brittle bones I'd be injured almost constantly either way, only I would feel the pain in my everyday. I don't think you'd have that much bigger survival chances either as you'd really be lagging if someone attacks you or you get in a car accident or just need to escape quickly in cases like house fire/natural disasters, you could easily get hurt on the way. I could take a health check once in awhile

There's other responses to injury than pain, such as "Oh, I seem to have had my left leg blown across the room. Pity." Brittle bones may but the ability to feel pain benefitting you is entirely circumstantial. Besides, lack of pain means calmer and more controlled emotional states in a state of emergency.

If you're not able to feel pain, what if your appendix bursts? What if you slip in a hallway and crack your head, but keep walking because you don't know and eventually flop over, dead, unless someone points it out. What if you get shot in the back and you think you where hit by a rock or something, then die?

So...not feel any pain, or be in pain all of the time(one of the worst kinds, since it is your bones breaking)? If you have great pain tolerance, or just like being in pain cuz its your kink, then maybe I can understand you going with the brittle bones. It's still going to hurt a lot and often. For those with the "pain is a defense mechanism" argument, you are right: You would know every time you are in pain or that something is wrong with your bones. But no pain at all? No pain from breaking something. No pain when I die. No pain due to illnesses. First, If something is visibly broken/dislocated, it isn't going to work properly. Of course I would do something about it by that point. Just because I won't be able to feel pain, doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to become careless. Second, our bodies have more than one defense mechanism that will warn us if something is wrong.(fever, vomiting, bleeding, diarrhea, etc.) We aren't going to be completely screwed over if we are missing one of our many defense mechanisms. More importantly though... DOCTORS EXIST! Regular checkups to check my well-being. Problem solved. You can say that some doctors aren't as good as others, but that doesn't change the fact that you will be having a medically trained professional taking a look at you regularly. Go regularly enough to the same doctor, and they are going to learn enough about you that small changes will be noticed. You can argue that regular checkups is going to get costly. But is it going to be more costly than all the ER trips you would have to take from all the broken bones you are going to get and procedures that you will need to take to fix badly broken bones(which will be easy to get since they are so brittle)? Even if we couldn't do anything about our problems, it is still a choice between dealing with no pain at the cost of shortening our own lifespan or being able to tell when we are in pain, but feeling extreme pain often due to an extremely high risk of broken bones. I've had a broken bone before. I know for absolute certain that I wouldn't want to go through that more than once. If I did, I am sure that any of my other problems would be ignored due to how painful it is. And if I had to deal with that pain all of the time...personally I rather kill myself. If my life isn't cut short by my own hand, it certainly will by all of the painkillers I would need to take to take off the edge. If my lifespan is going to shortened regardless, I rather live it pain-free. Thank you.
