Technological advances could be made in the cultural society, except they would only surround an artistic endeavor.

Science is necesarry, culture is just fun!
Andrea
Culture is necessary too.
Zach
Culture is a want, if it was a need then all of our culture would be the same.
deathpwnie
Culture makes life worth living, all science can do is make your boredom last longer.
Sarah
Science isn't really necessary. Besides, they don't say we have to ignore science, only focus on culture.
mm777
can't have tv with out science. can't have internet without science.
2weirdy
Meh, I'm satified with the games there are now. It would be best if I could enjoy it longer, at least that's my opinion.
Alec Martinez
@deathpwnie, dude, science is awesome! It's all about discovery! Who doesn't like that?
Advance
Remember, the FOCUS is on science. You'd still have a couple good songs and paintings and books and stuff. Other people can write a novel if they want to.
ptrck
culture music etc is what we just live for.
Jacob
Weird question. How can you run a society? If I ran a government I would spend more money on science, but also give money to aristic endeavours. Literature, music, films are all art. There's a lot of 'culture' that's not represented (sports, all sorts of communities, religions, clubs etc. etc.). I suppose they mean "Art (visual art, literature, music, films)".
that one guy
Disagree I enjoy fun and science isn't necessary
[deleted]
As much as it pains me so, you wouldn't be here clicking that big blue button if it weren't for science! Besides, you could always advance in science... before culture!

If the society only focused on science..hmmm...cure for cancer and a lot of other diseases.
LederpyHooves
@Saucy Goat The world already has a cure for cancer. They just want us to die..
MontyTheMonkey
It said focus, we would still have decent movies in the world.
Utah G
a society focused on science would get us great technology faster
Peter Ribar
How is it that science is necessary? People went on for many years living life perfectly fine, discovering things on their own instead of being told everything that's out there.

Science isn't necessary. There can be science existing in the world but you don't need science to live. I'm really torn, personally. In culture, wars can happen because it can be religion vs religion, and in science, it can be theory vs theory. I love using both sides of my brain, but I like art and expression a tiny bit more.

as long as we have our hearts and GOD we dont need science
Phangirl
Really people? "Fun first" Wow, ok. All of our technology, major discoveries, medical advancements, and you're going to give that up for fun? Yeah, we'll see how that works out.
cat_of_life
I didnt know what to choose, they're both important

How can we focus on science if we can't even open our minds to the creativity that surrounds us? How can we come up with theories without influence from the media?

I dare you to say this after you look at street art, Also think about it like this. What if yopur parents died. would you like to find out who killed them? or would you like to pull out some claurificated water and liquid nitrogen and create the world most affective claurine treatment.
Sara Lee Huang
Yeah
MastermanPG
Science DOES create beautiful pictures. Just look at the Mandelbrot set.
ImJustADino
Science has really no purpose for your future career (Unless you want to be a Scientist). I was born in Australia, and moved to America. That cultural change was not easy. I think society should focus on culture so that we can all understand each others customs better.

Because people dont focus on Science, Karens exist. Also, why do people dislike science because its "boring"? Its like the best elementary school subject. YOUR problem is the teachers. Fuck most science teachers.

Nope. Obviously, culture is a need. Do you guys know what culture is? Without culture, your life wouldn't be worth living.

Without science, you wouldn't be typing on a keyboard answering this question, but rather frolicking around in togas worshipping dieties and sacrificing non-believers as culture dictates. Also, no films.
Junaid Mohsin
what's wrong with that? (other than the sacrificing non-believers, that isn't a guarantee)
SomeGuyOverThere
1. It doesn't say we start from scratch, only that we would focus on culture from now on. 2. Technological advancements can still be made for cultural purposes. Films are a culture-related advancement. 3. Sacrificing non-believers isn't really a part of our culture, and I don't think slowing down science is going to change the culturally universal idea that killing people is wrong. 4. The reason I chose red is for medicine and energy advancements, things we actually need, not because I like science better than culture.
Suppah12
Science just shows what we CAN do, but culture decides our direction. Both science and culture makes society go forward, for an example science makes jobs easier by making new machines, and culture makes jobs easier by strenghtening the bonds between humans thus creating higher productivity. But in the end, science only mean power, but culture mean we can all live together aswell. Science = pointless power (and most likely war), Culture = perfect society.
Tiki
Without science, we'd be living in small hunter gatherer tribes and living about 20-30 years. Not to mention that our lives would be filled with hardship and difficulty. Compared to what our society can accomplish, in a few hundred years this current society will seem just as primitive.
Charlie Ogden
but we wouldnt complain because we wouldnt have any knowledge of new technology
Junaid Mohsin
im pretty sure we would live more that 20-30 years, that was WAAAAY back (not 100% sure but...). Despite the hardships and difficulties, we would be HAPPY with what we have, where as today we constantly want more. from another perspective people call it "aiming for the top". I believe that the key to living isn;t an easier life, it's a happy life. though things being easier today, there is more stress, more work, pollution, religious disputes that are tearing apart society slowly. i might be statistically wrong but i think i have a pretty good point.
CJ
Who said that we would only make weapons we could be using it on medicine also ever heard of solar power that would cut down on pollution also they can use electricity to make you happy since your brain and body movements are made by inpluses (electrical impullses) science is supposed to make life easier and less stressful also how is life with science stressful and how does it make more work also work is good and saying work is bad is just you being straight out lazy
Martin Lacika
i disagree, there's no place for culture without science, science makes culture possible, even painting on a wall with your finger is or rather was scientific progress at one point
dvell1
Culture is the very reason that there is conflict in the world, not science. The Cold War was brought about by the conflicting ideals of the United States and the U.S.S.R., not because of the technologies that either side had. If there had been a nuclear war, it wouldn't have been caused by the weapons existing themselves, but because of the conflicting ideals. Science brings the world forward, culture keeps it in place or tears it apart. People can't get along because of their cultural ideals, take religious rivalries for example. If two people grow up in the same area, but aren't told to think a certain way, these people could get along. If these people were raised with conflicting ideologies an still live in the same area, will they be able to get along. People put blame on science because either they can't see the bigger picture, or they just don't understand it. Name one war or conflict caused as a direct result of a scientific discovery.
Aiden
when has a war been caused because of science?
the capitalist
are you serious? no war between religions? HAHAHA

Science. A culturally focused society wouldn't make 3 minutes in an Age of Empires match.

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." -Albert Einstein
Oddwolflife Buraun
Just because you focus on science doesnt mean you dont have an imagination, to be able to make progress you have to imagine it.
Martin Lacika
science hugely rely on imagination, that's probably why it's einstein's quote, the quote was about intelligence (a necessity in science) not culture
Deathlake9
Yes you need imagination to invent something
MasterYoda13
imagination most often stems from culture, however. Spaceships were influenced by Jules Verne (culture), Cell phones after many wireless sci-fi devices like star trek (culture), TASER stand for Tom A Swift's Electric Rifle, after a (culture) book. There are more examples but my point is that culture influences imagination.
Yardie
Technically wouldn't society's culture be science...?
Vesko
Funny thing is most of the red-answerers know so much about science as I know about horse breeding.

I'll take lasers, space travel and better medical care over modern art, pop music and increasingly low-quality literature any day.

Africa focuses on a lot of culture and look at the state of them!
Exterrobang
Just because society would *focus* on culture, doesn't mean we couldn't still do science alongside.
wtfduud
Vice versa
Martin Lacika
that's why this question is a matter of greater importance ... therefore more people chose science

Solochewer
Science isnt important? Without science, there would be no medicine, there would be no technology, we wound hunt in primitive ways, many would die from food illnesses, not to mention all the diseases. If you ask me, science is way more important than culture ever will be. Science can bring us together just as much.
Abyss
Culture is very important! >:(
Infernoslayer621
no it isnt
lagreskul
Sorry to be yet another necromancer on this place, but we wouldn't be hunting with weapons without science.
Carissa Southwick
I'm pretty sure culture is what helped people be open to science and scientific ideas in the first place.
Infernoslayer621
and vise versa
ColinTheShelder
Opposite. Culture is what made everyone opposed to science. Culture set back science back centuries.
EnoughCactus
Umm, I'm sorry. Did you forget about religion for a second? Religion is basically the exact opposite of science....
Seraphsword
FINALLY! LITERATURE AND ART WILL BE NOTICED AND APPRECIATED!

If there's no culture then there are no movies, tv shows, books, music, art, etc. what would you do all day?
Infernoslayer621
if theres no science none of those would exist in the first place. besides it said focus on one not complettelyey ignore the other
Charles
I picked science only because I want my society to advance as much as it can to be stable and impressive all at once. I'd expect the technology it develops to be a combination of form and function though.
Areuto
When has art ever saved lives?
Abyss
No but culture has
Infernoslayer621
Not

"culture has" so are we gonna forget about the Holocaust and the Crusades?
abottleofrandom
Being a scientist could lead to you making a breakthrough, which in turn could gain popularity and become part of culture. It happened with the Internet.

Screw culture id rather get smarter than be some fag hippie

I love science, but I think I'd have more fun with more imagination.

In order for one man to be eternal many must die.
Abyss
So you'd like to watch all your family and friends who can't afford it die around you instead of living life to your fullest with your family and friends so that you know you have lived a life worth living?
Martin Lacika
funny how i agree with these culture-preferring people in here
Willkingo7
there would be so many scientists there would be no diseases, and tech will be more good
S1nT4X
culture doesnt matter if you invent time travel
hazar0
ok culture is when you are stressed like you can make an drawing or you can listen to a new hit but science, is the important part culture is like a play to keep your mind clean but if you have just dumb ___es in your society the evolving will be imposible as creating new inventions so think about it
Evan
culture would still exist and we would have more culture because space and stuff
TalkingEskie
well we need to focus our culture, history a bit more of course science is the of evolution but the results can be both good and bad also the destruction of the humanity and our world

We can live with the science that we already know. Arts are about understanding people and we would all generally be happier if everyone was better with people.

Culture is more necessary in my opinion. With science I feel like, enough is enough, and culture will always grow

Just because it's focused on something doesn't mean it can't dabble in the other. The art of today can inspire the science of tomorrow.
Infernoslayer621

BacktoDirac
I want society to focus on culture (art, literature, music, films, etc.) before science, because I don't want curing/vaccinating cancer, malaria, HIV, and other fatal diseases/viruses to be one of our focuses. That's right, if you voted culture, you are indeed an idiot. I'd also like to respond to a ridiculous comment I read that said "Culture makes life worth living, all science can do is make your boredom last longer." What you should have written: Science gives more and more life the chance of living, and one of the many amazing things that science can do is make your life last longer.
Top Hat Tony
This is hard, Science is better choice if morals are still present, If it's heartless science, Culture is absolutely necessary and would far surpass it in that situation.
Earl Sweatshirt
Maybe there will be less ignorant religious people :3
EdwardNigma
Although culture implies history and stuff, and I want to be a historian, science means progress and progress is good.
Kelly Lachmund
ai, both are so important, but i guess science is somewhat more since it can save people.
