Speed of death is the decisive factor, and the wood chipper provides it more immediately than a slow-moving roller.

get run over by a steam roller

A steam roller entered head-first would kill quickly without the prolonged tearing and shredding of a wood chipper.
Dying in one piece is preferable to being reduced to scattered fragments.
If the wood chipper is entered feet-first rather than head-first, the death would be horrifically slow and agonizing.
