Watching someone you love suffer or die is an unbearable experience that would haunt you for the rest of your life.
Taking the hit yourself spares your loved one both physical harm and the trauma of witnessing your suffering.
The guilt of watching helplessly while someone you care about is hurt is arguably a worse burden than any physical pain.

Surviving is a rational and honest choice — staying alive means you can still be present and useful to the people who need you.
In a genuine life-or-death moment, self-preservation is human instinct, not selfishness.
Paradoxically, if you die your loved one must also grieve you — both outcomes involve loss, so sacrificing yourself doesn't spare anyone pain.
